By Bailey Donley, co-owner and colorist at BR Collective
Lived-in, hand-painted color is one of my favorite things to do, and it’s one of the most requested services at BR Collective. Right after “can you do this?” comes the big question: “how long will it last?”
Here’s my honest answer. Most people go three to six months before they need a full refresh, with a gloss or two in between. But living on the coast changes things a little, so let me walk you through what to expect and how to make it last.
The short answer
That’s the beauty of balayage: it’s painted softly, so it grows out without a harsh line. Most of my guests go three to six months between lightening appointments.
What fades first usually isn’t the brightness. It’s the tone. That creamy beige or soft honey you walked out with can start drifting warmer or a little brassy after six to ten weeks. The good news? That’s an easy fix, and it’s exactly what a gloss is for.
What fades your color here on the coast
We love living here, but our hair has a few things working against it:
- Sun. UV breaks down your toner and keeps lightening your hair, which is why summer blondes go brassy.
- Salt water. A day at Wrightsville or Carolina Beach dries out your hair, and dry hair lets tone slip away faster.
- Pool chlorine. It strips tone and can leave lighter hair looking dull.
- Humidity. When hair frizzes, it doesn’t reflect light as well, so your color looks less shiny even if it hasn’t faded.
- Hard or well water. Minerals build up over time and can dull or warm up blondes.
The gloss in between
If there’s one thing I recommend to every balayage guest, it’s a gloss. It puts tone back in and brings the shine back without lightening anything. Our Gloss & Finish is $90, or you can add a Gloss / Toner Refresh to a haircut for $50.
A lot of my blondes come in for a gloss every six to eight weeks and a full color refresh two or three times a year. It keeps your color looking fresh, and honestly, it’s the kind of appointment that feels like a little reset.
What to do at home
What you do between appointments matters just as much as what we do in the chair. Here’s what I tell my guests:
- Wash a little less, and a little cooler. Two or three washes a week in lukewarm water helps your tone last longer.
- Use a gentle, color-safe shampoo. I send most guests home with NATULIQUE Everyday or Nourishing Anti-Frizz Hairwash and Conditioner.
- Protect it before the beach or pool. Wet your hair with fresh water and put on a leave-in before you swim, then rinse right after. NATULIQUE Heat and Sun Protector is my go-to.
- Mask once a week. A hydrating mask keeps lightened ends smooth and shiny.
- Always use heat protection. Hot tools fade tone fast.
When to book your next visit
- Every 6–10 weeks: a gloss or toner refresh if your tone looks warm or dull.
- Every 3–6 months: Partial Custom Color ($225) to brighten the top and around your face, or Full Custom Color ($325) for all-over dimension.
- Before a big event: book your color two to three weeks ahead, then a gloss or blowout the week of.
Every color service at BR Collective uses ammonia-free NATULIQUE color, so your maintenance visits are gentler on your hair along the way. Take a look at the full menu, or book online with me or Rachel. Ready for your next hair day? We’d love to see you.
