“Is ammonia-free color actually better, or is it just marketing?”
I get asked this almost every week, and honestly, I love it. It means you’re paying attention to what goes on your hair. So here’s my real answer: yes, it’s gentler on most hair and scalps, and it’s a much nicer experience to sit through. But “ammonia-free” on a label doesn’t tell you the whole story. What a brand uses instead of ammonia matters just as much.
So what does ammonia actually do?
Your hair is protected by a cuticle, a layer that lies flat like shingles on a roof. For permanent color to work, that cuticle has to open up so the color can get inside. For a long time, ammonia has been the go-to for that job. It’s fast and it’s strong, which is why it’s still in most box dye and a lot of salon color.
You’ve probably felt the downside: that sharp smell, a scalp that stings or itches, and hair that feels a little drier every time you color. Over time, hair that’s been opened up again and again starts to struggle to hold onto color, which is part of why some color fades so fast.
The part most salons don’t mention
Color still needs something to open the cuticle, so ammonia-free formulas swap in a different ingredient. The most common one is called MEA. It doesn’t give off fumes, so the whole appointment feels calmer.
But I want to be straight with you: MEA isn’t automatically gentler. Because it doesn’t evaporate the way ammonia does, a formula that leans on it heavily can linger in your hair. Some brands have made the fair point that a few “ammonia-free” colors aren’t much kinder than the regular kind. That’s exactly why I care more about the whole formula than the label on the front.
Why we chose NATULIQUE
We use NATULIQUE for every single color service at BR Collective. It’s a Danish line that’s been around since 1998, and their color is ammonia-free and made with certified-organic ingredients. What sold me is that they don’t just trade one harsh ingredient for another. They build the formula to keep things like PPD, MEA and resorcinol to a minimum, and it still gives full gray coverage.
In the chair, the difference is real. The studio doesn’t smell like chemicals. Guests with sensitive scalps are comfortable. And hair feels soft at the rinse, not stripped. Healthy hair always comes first for us, and this is the color that lets us keep it that way.
Who notices it most
If your scalp gets sensitive, this is for you. (If you’ve ever had an actual allergic reaction to hair dye, please tell me before you book so we can talk through a patch test first.)
If your hair is fine, fragile or has been through a lot, gentler processing means it holds up better over time, and your color lasts longer between visits.
If you’re covering gray, good news: it covers gray beautifully. I explain how in my post on gray coverage.
And if you just hate that salon smell, you’ll love it here. It’s a genuinely calmer hour.
What it can’t do
I’d rather set expectations now than surprise you later. No color line can do everything in one visit. Going from very dark to very light, or undoing box dye, can take a couple of appointments no matter what’s in the bowl. And if we’re lightening your hair, we still use a lightener. I’ll always tell you what I’m using and why. Gentle doesn’t mean slow. It means we take the route that keeps your hair healthy on the way there.
What to expect when you come in
Every color service on our menu uses NATULIQUE, with no upcharge and nothing extra to ask for. We’ll start with a real conversation about your hair and your goals and you’ll leave with a finished style and a few simple tips to keep your color bright in all this Wilmington sun and humidity.
Think of it as a little reset. Natural-looking color. Thoughtful care. Hair that feels like you.
Quick answers
Does ammonia-free color last as long? Yes. With the right formula and good aftercare, most of my guests come back for roots or a gloss on the same schedule they always have.
Can it cover gray? It can. NATULIQUE is made for full gray coverage, and if you’d rather grow out softly, we can blend your gray instead.
Is it safe during pregnancy? Please check with your doctor first. If they’re comfortable with it, I’m happy to talk through options and timing with you.
Where can I try it in Wilmington? Come see us. You can book a color consultation or any color service online with me or Rachel. We’d love to have you in.
